Positive Behavior Supports
Positive Behavioral Supports (PBS) is a program that proactively works to prevent and intervene with behavior problems. PBS emerged about twelve years ago as an alternative to more traditional behavior approaches for students with severe disabilities who engaged in self-injury and aggressive behavior. PBS is researched based and data driven. Over the years, PBS has since emerged as a tool to be used with children with and without disabilities to achieve long-term positive social behavior. PBS is a powerful tool that all schools and families can use as they address issues related to troubling behavior and create effective learning environments. PBS is a great tool for collaboration.
PBS is a three tiered model that objective is to create a safe and effective school environment where students are capable of self-management. "BPS focuses on changing the environment while traditional approaches focus primarily on changing the person" (ldonline).
The first tier of PBS includes all students. PBS believes that students do not come to school knowing what is appropriate and not appropriate, and must be taught what these look like. Positive reinforcement for all students, as well as consistent consequences for problem behaviors are an important step in this first tier. According to PBS if students have effective procedures, instruction, and classroom management in tier one, than problem behaviors are less likely to occur.
Support is increased during tier two. This tier includes fewer students that tier one and is more individualized, to help target specific
problems. In tier two, targeted social skills are taught. By using data of behavior problems, the school can pin point problem behaviors that need to be address. Students in this tier have simple behavior plans, that will help them work on these behaviors.
The most intense tier is tier three. This tier is reserved for the students who did not respond to tier one or tier two of PBS. In this tier students have a functional behavior plan. This plan is individualized to help a specific student. In this tier parents are brought in for collaboration and education. If necessary, a health professional is also contacted. Tier three is highly individualized and provides the highest level of support for the student.
A key component of PBS is a functional behavioral assessment (FBA). The FBA includes the observations and input of people close to the person exhibiting problem behavior. This team observes the person's behavior to identify and define the problematic behavior, what actions or events precede the behavior, those that follow the behavior, how often the behavior occurs, what actions or events precede the behavior and those that follow the behavior. The FBA serves as an important part of the process in determining appropriate positive behavioral support plans.
